Hotel Schloss Hugenpoet
Schloss Hugenpoet feels more like a place you settle into than a grand statement, with its mix of history, character and understated comfort.
We went on a test & review of this five star superior hotel, a member of QL Hotels & Restaurants, Feine Privat Hotels and the 101 Besten Hotels Deutschlands.

Luxury measured in privacy, not excess
Schloss Hugenpoet feels deliberately removed from the pace of the nearby Ruhr region. Green meadows, water and mature trees frame the castle, creating a sense of arrival that is immediate and lasting.
The castle dates back to the 17th century and carries the legacy of Baron von Fürstenberg. Historic architecture and calm proportions define the property, while contemporary comfort keeps it relevant for today’s leisure and business travellers.
Schloss Hugenpoet offers 36 individually designed rooms and suites. Rather than imposing a single style, the hotel allows variety within a coherent aesthetic.
Our stay in one of the villas reinforced the hotel’s core strengths: privacy, tranquillity and a strong sense of place. Luxury here is not about scale or excess, but about space, silence and consistency. It is an address that stays with you, precisely because it does not try too hard.
Villa Türmchen
Staying in the Villa Türmchen feels noticeably different from the main castle. Less as a hotel room and more as a private residence.
With around 100 m², the space is generous. A fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living and dining area, and an open fireplace create a setting that invites you to settle in. We spent time here sitting by the fire with a book. The bedroom and bathroom are located upstairs.
The private terrace and enclosed courtyard bring a level of calm that is hard to match within the main building. For longer stays, or ik you value autonomy without losing access to the hotel’s atmosphere, this setup is difficult to fault.
1831 & Bar BARonie Hours
Schlosshotel Hugenpoet offers "1831," situated in the left conservatory, open from Wednesday to Saturday from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Additionally, the Bar BARonie welcomes both residents and non-residents for pre or post-dinner drinks and snacks.
The Bistro in the Coach House
Dining at Schloss Hugenpoet is informal. The Bistro in the former coach house is a warm space that fits the rhythm of the estate. It feels accessible, calm and well judged. The menu focuses on hearty dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, complemented by homemade elements. The cooking is honest, designed to please a broad audience while maintaining a clear standard. This is food meant to be enjoyed, not analysed.
From the bistro, views across to the castle’s main house add a quiet sense of theatre, especially in the evening. It reinforces the idea that dining here is part of the overall stay, not a separate destination.
Set just outside Essen, in the green, village-like surroundings of Kettwig, Schloss Hugenpoet offers a quieter take on luxury. The moated castle retains its historic character, yet feels comfortable and lived-in rather than formal. What works here is the balance.
Our stay made it clear that Schloss Hugenpoet does not rely on grand gestures. The focus is on comfort, consistency and a certain ease. That restraint is precisely what gives the hotel its lasting impact.
